Apple Inc. has officially discontinued its highest-end desktop computer, the Mac Pro. The move signals a strategic shift by the tech giant, prioritizing its more compact and recently updated Mac Studio line for its most demanding professional users. The Mac Pro, once the pinnacle of Apple's desktop offerings, has been removed from the company's website.
The Mac Pro, a machine historically priced starting at $6,999, was designed for professionals requiring immense computing power, such as video editors and photographers. However, its last significant update was in 2023, when it received Apple's in-house M2 Ultra chip. This configuration has since been overshadowed by the capabilities of the smaller Mac Studio, which received the more advanced M3 Ultra chip last year.
The discontinuation suggests Apple is consolidating its professional desktop strategy around the Mac Studio, which offers comparable or superior performance in a more modern and potentially more cost-effective package for many users. While the Mac Pro represented the ultimate in modularity and power for a specific niche, the rapid advancements in Apple's silicon have seemingly made the Mac Studio the more compelling choice for the majority of its professional clientele.
