Snapchat is making it easier than ever to create dynamic content with its new AI Clips feature. This innovative tool allows users to transform a single still photo into a five-second AI-generated video, bringing static images to life with immersive scenarios. The feature aims to provide instant, personal, and shareable AI video experiences directly within the Snapchat app.
AI Clips is integrated into Lens Studio, a platform where developers can create augmented reality (AR) Lenses. Using the GenAI Suite, developers can build Lenses that place users in diverse environments, such as scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean, climbing a mountain, or walking around the Taj Mahal. Once a Lens is created, Snapchat users can select it and use one of their own photos to generate a personalized 5-second AI video.
Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, stated that AI Clips are designed for "scale, creativity and repeat engagement." The process for developers is streamlined, with a single Lens reportedly creatable in minutes using just one prompt, making it accessible for both experienced and novice developers.
It's important to note that AI Clips operates as a "closed-prompt experience." This means users are limited to the scenarios defined by the pre-built Lenses. Unlike open-ended text-to-video generators, users cannot input custom text prompts to dictate specific actions or scenes beyond what the Lens offers. For example, a user cannot instruct the AI to show them racing a car and then winning a checkered flag if the Lens doesn't support it.
Snapchat is also providing opportunities for creators to monetize their AI Clips. Through the Lens Plus Payouts program, creators can earn revenue-share payouts based on the engagement their Lenses receive. Given that Snapchat users created nearly 2 trillion snaps in 2025, with an average of 5.5 billion per day, the potential user base for engaging Lenses is substantial.
AI video generation has become significantly more accessible in recent years. Platforms like OpenAI's Sora, Adobe Firefly, Veo 3, Runway, and Midjourney offer various ways to create AI videos using text and images. Even YouTube has introduced features like Reimagine, allowing users to transform a single frame from a YouTube Short into a new 8-second clip. Snapchat's AI Clips adds another dimension to this rapidly evolving field by focusing on personalized, photo-to-video transformations within its popular messaging app.
