Apple's long-promised, significantly delayed, and much-hyped overhaul of its virtual assistant, Siri, is reportedly not only struggling to materialize but is also causing significant setbacks for the company's physical product releases. New reporting suggests that the development woes of Siri have directly impacted the launch timelines of several innovative smart home devices.
For years, Apple has been working on a more capable and intelligent version of Siri, aiming to compete more effectively in the smart assistant market. However, this project has been plagued by delays and internal challenges. According to recent reports, the ambition to create a truly next-generation Siri has become a major bottleneck for the company.
The delays in Siri's development have had a ripple effect, pushing back the launch of several new hardware products designed to showcase the assistant's enhanced capabilities. Among these are devices codenamed J490 and J491. The J490 was envisioned as Apple's answer to devices like the Amazon Echo Show, featuring a screen with an Apple Watch-like interface. The J491 was reportedly a wall-mounted variant of the J490.
Furthermore, a more whimsical product, described as a tabletop robot powered by Siri, has also been affected. These devices were initially slated for release in spring of this year, following an earlier delay from 2025.
Sources indicate that Apple's struggle to develop its own robust AI model has been a primary reason for the ongoing delays. This difficulty reportedly led to an embarrassing decision to license an AI model from Google, followed by further hype and subsequent postponements. The goal was to create a "personalized" version of Siri, intended to be integral to controlling home appliances, music, and communications.
With the anticipated March launch of the new Siri and its associated hardware now passed, the timeline has reportedly shifted again. Sources suggest that these new smart home products, along with the improved Siri, might now be targeted for a September release. However, given the project's history, potential customers are advised to remain cautious about firm expectations for a fall launch.
