After a considerable two-year wait since the Apple Vision Pro's debut, users can now finally access an official YouTube application. This long-awaited app brings the full spectrum of YouTube content, including standard, 3D, 360, and VR180 videos, directly to Apple's spatial computer. The app supports 8K resolution playback for users with the M5 version of the device.
For the past two years, Vision Pro owners have relied on third-party workarounds, such as the now-removed Juno app, to watch YouTube content. The absence of an official app was a notable gap, especially given the device's premium price point. The delay is largely seen as a consequence of the Apple Vision Pro being a niche product, with Apple not having sold a substantial number of units. This limited market size has provided little incentive for major content providers like YouTube to invest in developing dedicated visionOS applications.
While YouTube has finally arrived, other prominent services are still missing native applications on the Vision Pro. Netflix, for instance, remains inaccessible through a dedicated app, forcing users to stream content via the Safari web browser. This workaround, while functional, lacks the refined user experience and features that a native application would offer. Third-party solutions have emerged to fill these gaps, but they often come with a cost and do not provide the seamless integration expected from a polished visionOS experience. The late arrival of the YouTube app serves as a reminder that the Apple Vision Pro still has a significant journey ahead to achieve the widespread adoption and ecosystem development Apple envisioned.
