Discord has announced the global implementation of a comprehensive age verification system, scheduled to roll out next month. The initiative will default all user accounts to a “teen-appropriate” experience, restricting access to certain content and features unless the user verifies they are an adult. This move is part of a broader industry trend driven by international legal efforts to enhance child safety online.
Accounts that are not verified as adult will face several limitations. Access to age-restricted servers and channels will be blocked, and the ability to speak in livestream-style “stage” channels will be disabled. Furthermore, the platform will apply content filters to any material it detects as graphic or sensitive. To mitigate unwanted interactions, the system will also generate warning prompts for friend requests from potentially unfamiliar users and automatically filter direct messages from them into a separate inbox.
To regain full access, users must confirm their adult status through one of several methods. The platform is introducing a tiered approach that balances user convenience with verification accuracy.
1. Passive Age Inference: For a segment of its user base, Discord will employ an age inference model. This system analyzes metadata such as the types of games played, platform activity, and behavioral signals. If the model determines with high confidence that a user is an adult, no further verification steps will be required.
2. Facial Age Estimation: The primary active verification method involves facial age estimation. Users will be prompted to take a video selfie, which is then analyzed by AI on the user's device to estimate an age group. According to Discord, this data is processed locally and never leaves the device.
3. Identity Document Submission: If the facial estimation is inconclusive or a user wishes to appeal its result, they can submit a photo of a government-issued identity document. This process is handled by a third-party vendor. In response to past privacy concerns involving a former vendor, Discord states that the images of these documents are deleted immediately after the age confirmation is complete.
Discord emphasizes that its new system uses facial estimation, not biometric scanning or facial recognition, and that no personal information from IDs is retained. The company anticipates that the majority of its users, who do not engage with adult-oriented content, will not experience a significant change. However, the platform acknowledges the potential for some user attrition as a result of these new requirements and is planning accordingly. The primary objective is to create a safer environment by more effectively segmenting content for different age groups.
