Tesla has announced that a production-ready version of its Optimus humanoid robot is slated for unveiling in the first quarter of 2026. This next iteration, dubbed "Gen 3," promises significant enhancements over its predecessors, including an updated hand design. The company is actively preparing for the robot's mass production, with plans to establish a dedicated production line before the end of 2026 and an ambitious target of one million units annually.
The upcoming third-generation Optimus robot is set to feature "major upgrades" compared to the current version 2.5. A key highlight will be Tesla's latest hand design, suggesting improved dexterity and functionality. This advancement is crucial as Tesla aims to transition Optimus from a prototype to a mass-produced product.
Tesla is not only developing the robot but also laying the groundwork for its large-scale manufacturing. The company is preparing the first production line, which is scheduled to commence operations before the close of 2026. The long-term vision includes achieving an annual production capacity of one million Optimus robots. To facilitate this ambitious goal, Tesla's Fremont factory will undergo a significant shift. Elon Musk revealed that production of the Model S and Model X vehicles will cease in the second quarter of 2026 to make space for Optimus manufacturing.
Elon Musk has consistently articulated a broad vision for Optimus, extending beyond its initial deployment in Tesla's own factories. He has predicted that the humanoid robot could eventually serve as a home assistant and even perform complex tasks like surgery. Tesla has indicated plans to begin selling Optimus to the public as early as next year, underscoring the company's increasing financial reliance on the potential success of its robotics division.
