Many people are aware that highly processed snacks and sugary drinks fall into the ultra-processed category. However, a recent discussion highlights that even seemingly healthier options, like flavored yogurt, can be classified as ultra-processed. This revelation prompts a closer look at common foods that might be sneaking into our diets with a less-than-ideal nutritional profile.
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are typically industrial formulations made mostly from substances extracted from foods, or synthesized in labs, with little or no whole food. They often contain additives like artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and preservatives to enhance taste, texture, and shelf life. These foods are generally low in fiber and essential nutrients while being high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium.
While items like chips, cookies, and soda are commonly recognized as UPFs, several other foods might catch you off guard:
Being aware of the processing level of the foods we consume is crucial for maintaining a healthy diet. Opting for whole, unprocessed foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can significantly improve nutritional intake.
