The Game Awards 2025 kicked off with a major surprise: Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new single-player action-RPG. Leading the development is Casey Hudson, the visionary director behind the beloved Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. This announcement has ignited excitement among fans eager for a return to the classic Star Wars RPG experience.
The initial teaser trailer offered a glimpse of a Jedi igniting a blue lightsaber on an Interdictor-class cruiser, a ship design notably featured in the original KOTOR. The trailer also hinted at a three-character party system, reminiscent of the classic RPG, sparking hopes for the return of iconic droid companions like the HK units.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is being developed by Arcanaut Studios, a new company founded by Hudson. While Lucasfilm Games emphasizes that it is "not a direct sequel or continuation" of the original Knights of the Old Republic, the game draws clear aesthetic inspiration from the beloved titles. Douglas Reilly, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games, expressed enthusiasm for exploring the rich Old Republic era with a fresh narrative.
Casey Hudson shared his personal connection to the project, stating, "Working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was one of the defining experiences of my career." He added that Fate of the Old Republic will tell a "completely new and different story" focusing on choice, destiny, and the eternal conflict between light and dark, fulfilling a long-held dream to collaborate with Lucasfilm Games again.
With its focus on a new story within a cherished era and the return of a key creative force from the original game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is poised to capture the imagination of a new generation of players while satisfying the nostalgia of long-time fans. The game is currently in early development for PC and consoles.
