The Game Awards 2025 has unveiled "Decrepit," a new first-person horror Soulslike developed by the one-man studio Jämmerdal Games. Published by Three Friends, the game promises a challenging dungeon-crawling experience with roguelike elements, set within a decaying medieval prison. Players will face tough combat, intricate level design, and formidable bosses as they attempt to escape.
Decrepit thrusts players into a "decaying, medieval prison" where the primary objective is to escape a forsaken castle. Each attempt begins in a different prison cell, adding a layer of unpredictability to the roguelike structure. The developers emphasize learning the castle's layout, memorizing corridors, and discovering shortcuts to shorten future runs. This approach aims to make early attempts feel overwhelming, while later runs become more focused as players gain knowledge of the environment and its threats.
The game draws heavy inspiration from the Souls series, featuring stamina-based combat against grotesque undead enemies. Notably, the game includes a "FromSoftware icon Wheely Skeleton," a unique foe that adds to the game's distinct visual identity. Players can expect challenging boss fights that will test their skills and perseverance. In true roguelike fashion, all acquired gear is lost upon an unsuccessful run. However, players can equip a single weapon, staff, and armor piece, which define their playstyle and archetype, such as Mage, Rogue, Warrior, or Shaman. Permanent upgrades can be unlocked by discovering secrets within the castle, offering a sense of persistent progression.
Decrepit is designed as a hardcore experience, deliberately omitting maps and quest markers. Success hinges on the player's own intuition, observation, and skill to navigate the labyrinthine castle and overcome its challenges. The developers acknowledge the game's challenging nature, stating it's "much closer to Dark Souls" but also influenced by games like Dishonored. Decrepit is slated for release in 2026, and interested players can currently sign up for a playtest on Steam.
