After close to twenty years, Creative Assembly has confirmed that Total War - Medieval 3 is in development. The studio revealed the title during its 25th Anniversary Showcase and returned to a period that strategy players have long requested.
The news has stirred excitement across the player base, above all among veterans. The first Total War - Medieval set a high mark for historical strategy besides Medieval 2 appeared almost twenty years ago. Since then fans have waited for a follow up set in the same period.
Creative Assembly says Medieval 3 has entered early pre production. The studio chose to announce the project now in order to speak with players through every step of development. The goal is an "ultimate medieval strategy sandbox" that lets players "shape realms, rewrite history and live the Middle Ages in ways not seen before." The team calls the project a "rebirth of historical Total War."
Creative Assembly gave no release date and named no platforms for Total War - Medieval 3 - yet the confirmation itself ranks as a major event. The 25th Anniversary Showcase also brought other news - a large update for Total War - Warhammer 3 next summer and a new engine that will carry future Total War games to PlayStation or Xbox consoles.
The return to the medieval era matters because earlier games set in that period earned the strongest praise in the franchise. Players expect Medieval 3 to surpass its predecessors and deliver the deepest medieval strategy experience to date.
