The long rumored Horizon MMORPG now has an official name: Horizon Steel Frontiers. South Korean studio NCSoft builds the game with help from Guerrilla Games. It turns the Horizon world into a shared online space for many players right away.
The platform list surprised many. Horizon Steel Frontiers is built only for mobile phones and personal computers. Players on both devices share the same world plus play together. The game will not appear on PlayStation consoles, even though every earlier Horizon game launched there.
The story still takes place in the familiar post apocalyptic world, but Aloy and the other heroes from the single player games will not appear. Each player designs a personal character and roams the world alongside other people.
The combat system is rebuilt for large groups. Solo fights give way to team tactics - players must coordinate to defeat the huge machines that define the series. NCSoft says it will add new mechanics meant for battles that involve dozens of players right away.
There is no launch date. The footage shown during the reveal carries a “pre-alpha” label, a sign that core systems are still taking shape. A full release lies far in the future.
