People have argued for years about whether a gamepad or a mouse-and-keyboard gives the better edge in shooters and now Battlefield has stirred the pot again. Some PC players feel that console users get an unfair boost - they tamper with their own game files instead of waiting for an official fix.
A homemade trick is spreading among PC users who want to dodge matches against console gamers. Streamer Otto "ottr" Boström showed how to change a few local files in order to switch crossplay off. His viewers copied the steps because they think the auto aim given to gamepad users wins too many straight gunfights.
The move shows that a large part of the player base believes the aim assist is stronger than it should be. Ottr warns that disabling crossplay leaves more AI soldiers in a match, since fewer real players remain in the smaller pool. He hopes the idea will catch on and create steadier rounds, much like the old bot farms that once helped people grind ranks before the studio adjusted progression.
EA and DICE say they hear the complaints plus are looking at both aim assist strength and weapon recoil, though they promise no exact tweaks yet. If masses of players adopt the file edit trick, the base could split and push the studio to ship an official patch or add a simple menu toggle that turns crossplay off. The community's do-it-yourself fix might hurry the makers toward a balance change that many see as vital for fair play.
