Racing fans who play on the Switch 2 want to feel as if they sit in the real car. Cheap plastic rings that clip around the Joy-Con work, but players still want a stronger, stiffer wheel that does not cost as much as a full racing rig. Numskull now plans to sell a middle ground product for people who play titles like Mario Kart World.
The company lists the Joy-Con Steering Wheel for Switch 2 with a release date of 22 November and a preorder price of about thirty dollars. The unit gives players a solid, full size wheel instead of a thin plastic ring.
Many wheels on sale today are small, hollow shells that snap around each Joy-Con. Numskull's version is much larger. Two sturdy suction cups fix the base to a table or desk. The player clicks both Joy-Con 2 controllers into hidden docks inside the wheel rim. Steering data comes from the controllers’ gyros, while the internal motors supply rumble. The wheel needs no batteries and no cable to the console.
At thirty dollars, the peripheral could become the new reference point for budget racing gear on Switch 2. It works with any software that reads motion controls, from Star Wars Episode I - Racer to driving sections in open world games. Other accessory firms might follow the example plus release mid price parts for the console. The wheel fits only the new Joy-Con 2 because those controllers differ in size and shape from the old Joy-Con.
