California-based startup Telo Trucks has announced a significant milestone in its journey to produce a compact electric pickup. The company has successfully closed a $20 million Series A funding round, led by notable investors including Yves Behar and Tesla cofounder Marc Tarpenning. This capital infusion is earmarked to propel Telo towards production readiness and ensure the MT1 model meets all federal road requirements.
Telo Trucks aims to disrupt the market dominated by larger electric pickups like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T. The Telo MT1 is positioned as a smaller, more affordable alternative, drawing inspiration from imported Japanese kei trucks. It's specifically designed for urban dwellers and "weekend warriors" seeking utility without the bulk of traditional trucks.
Despite its compact size, measuring just 152 inches long (comparable to a Mini Cooper), the Telo MT1 boasts a surprisingly spacious interior seating five people and a five-foot bed. Innovative design elements include a Rivian-like cargo tunnel running behind the rear seats and a folding midgate, which allows for extended storage, such as for surfboards.
Telo plans to commence production of the MT1 in late 2025, with an anticipated price tag of $41,520. While not inexpensive, this price point is significantly lower than many current electric trucks and below the average price for new vehicles. The company reports having secured approximately 12,000 preorders, indicating a positive market reception for its unique concept. However, the EV startup landscape remains challenging, with several companies facing financial difficulties in recent years.
