What is the new Cupra Raval and why is it significant?

The Cupra Raval is a new all-electric compact car set to enter the market with a starting price under £23,000. It represents a significant move by the Volkswagen Group to offer an affordable, performance-oriented electric vehicle. The Raval is positioned as a direct competitor to models like the Renault 5 and will be the sportiest option among its upcoming siblings, the Volkswagen ID Cross, ID Polo, and Skoda Epiq.

How does Cupra achieve such a competitive price?

The low cost is made possible by using the 'MEB Plus' platform, a cost-optimized version of the electric vehicle architecture used in larger models like the Cupra Born. A key cost-saving measure is the use of a torsion beam rear suspension. Unlike a more complex multi-link setup, a torsion beam is a simpler, more durable design that connects the rear wheels, effectively reducing manufacturing costs without significantly compromising handling for a car of this size.

Is the Raval a practical choice for daily driving?

Despite its compact dimensions (4.05m long), the Raval offers notable practicality. Its boot capacity is 430 litres, which is larger than that of the bigger Cupra Born. This is achieved through a large underfloor storage compartment, similar to the design seen in the Ford Puma Gen-E. With two battery options available, drivers can choose a configuration that suits their needs, with a claimed range of up to 280 miles for the larger battery pack, making it suitable for more than just city driving.

What are the performance and battery options?

Cupra will offer a broad lineup. The entry-level 'Core' model features a 114bhp motor and a 37kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, offering around 185 miles of range. LFP batteries are known for their durability and lower cost. Mid-range 'V1' and 'V2' trims offer up to 208bhp and an optional 52kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, which provides a higher energy density for a longer range of about 280 miles. Charging speeds reach up to 130kW, allowing for rapid top-ups.

How does the high-performance VZ model stand out?

At the top of the range is the Raval VZ, priced around £37,000. This model is a direct rival to the performance-focused Alpine A290. It uses the 52kWh battery to power a 222bhp motor, achieving a 0-62mph time of 7.0 seconds. To manage the power effectively through the front wheels, it is fitted with an electronic limited-slip differential. This system automatically adjusts power delivery between the front wheels to maximize traction during cornering, enhancing its sporty character. Its range is estimated to be around 250 miles.
