What is the plan for the next BMW 3-Series?

BMW is developing a new generation of the 3-Series that will continue to use gasoline and diesel engines. This new model will be sold alongside the all-electric i3 sedan, which is part of BMW's "Neue Klasse" (New Class) family. While the new combustion 3-Series will borrow some styling from the electric version, it will maintain its own distinct design and will be built on a different platform.

A test car was seen with four exhaust pipes. Is this the new M3?

The prototype with quad exhausts is not the next M3. This feature will no longer be exclusive to the top M model. Instead, evidence points to this being a new high-performance model that will likely replace the current M340i. The expected name for this new variant is the M350 xDrive.

What engine and performance can we expect from the M350 xDrive?

The M350 xDrive is anticipated to feature BMW's proven 3.0-liter B58 inline-six engine. An inline-six is an engine where all six cylinders are arranged in a straight line, a design known for its smoothness. With turbocharging, this engine is expected to produce over 400 horsepower. The "xDrive" in its name indicates it will be equipped with BMW's all-wheel-drive system, which provides power to all four wheels for improved grip and acceleration.

What about the rest of the 3-Series lineup?

The new 3-Series will offer a wide variety of engine choices to suit different needs. The core of the range will likely consist of 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines, available in both gasoline and diesel. Many of these will incorporate mild-hybrid technology. This system uses a small electric motor to assist the engine, which helps save fuel and provides a slight performance boost. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, which can be charged and driven on pure electric power for short distances, are also expected.

What does this mean for the top-tier M3 model?

The flagship BMW M3 will also be updated for the new generation. It is set to continue using an evolution of the current S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The significant change is that the new M3 will also adopt mild-hybrid technology. This addition is intended to enhance its already formidable performance and improve responsiveness, ensuring it remains the pinnacle of the 3-Series family.
