The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture has unveiled the fifth generation of its incredibly popular Wuling Hongguang Mini EV in China. Despite its short six-year lifespan, this marks the model's fifth iteration, showcasing the rapid pace of development in China's electric vehicle market. This latest version boasts a refreshed exterior, an upgraded interior with enhanced technology, and increased driving range, all while maintaining its status as one of the most affordable EVs available.

Key Takeaways

Redesigned Exterior and Interior

The new Wuling Hongguang Mini EV presents a softer, more approachable aesthetic with a friendly, upright front end. It features round LED headlights and taillights connected by a chrome strip. While the overall silhouette remains familiar, every exterior panel has been updated. The five-door layout, first introduced on the previous model, continues to enhance practicality.

Inside, the dashboard has been significantly revised. A larger 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen now takes center stage, complemented by slimmer climate vents. Physical climate controls have been eliminated, and a column-mounted gear selector frees up additional space between the front seats. The cabin also offers 20 separate storage compartments, maximizing the utility of its compact dimensions.

Compact Dimensions and Practicality

The five-door Hongguang Mini EV measures 3,268 mm (128.7 inches) in length, a slight increase from its predecessor. The two-door version remains the more compact option at 3,064 mm (120.6 inches). Cargo space is rated at 170 liters (6 cu ft) with the rear seats up, expanding to 838 liters (29.6 cu ft) when folded.

Performance and Range

Powering the Hongguang Mini EV is a rear-mounted electric motor producing 40 hp (30 kW) and 85 Nm (63 lb-ft) of torque. The top speed is capped at 101 km/h (62 mph). Buyers have a choice between two battery packs: a 16.2 kWh unit offering 205 km (127 miles) of CLTC range, and a larger 25.1 kWh battery that extends the range to 301 km (187 miles). Both configurations support 30% to 80% charging in approximately 35 minutes.

Pricing and Accessibility

The 2026 Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is now available in China. Pricing ranges from ¥44,800 ($6,500) for the base model to ¥55,800 ($8,100) for the top-tier version with the extended-range battery. With available subsidies, the entry price can drop to as low as ¥42,800 ($6,200), solidifying its position as one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market.
