BMW is gearing up to electrify its performance division, with the upcoming iX3 M spotted undergoing cold-weather testing. This high-performance electric SUV is expected to be a significant entry into the EV market, potentially boasting an impressive power output and advanced drivetrain technology.
The BMW iX3 M prototype, heavily camouflaged, appears visually similar to the standard model. However, subtle hints of its performance capabilities are evident, including larger wheels and a high-performance braking system with cross-drilled discs and blue calipers at the front. Production models are anticipated to feature sportier bumpers, a revised grille, and a modified diffuser, along with distinctive M badging.
While exterior details are largely concealed, interior spy shots reveal key M-specific features. The prototype is equipped with an M sport steering wheel, distinct from standard offerings, and shows red and blue contrast stitching. Dedicated M buttons are visible, though taped over. Heavily bolstered sport seats with taped M logos further confirm its performance orientation. Inside, occupants can expect BMW's signature pillar-to-pillar Panoramic iDrive display and a 17.9-inch infotainment system.
BMW M has confirmed that its future EVs will feature a quad-motor setup. This configuration allows for precise power and torque distribution to each wheel individually. The front axle can also be completely decoupled to enable rear-wheel-drive characteristics and enhance efficiency. These models will also incorporate simulated gear shifts and a newly developed soundscape. Powering this system will be a 100+ kWh battery pack, specifically adapted for high-performance demands. BMW also promises long-range capability, highly efficient energy recuperation, 800-volt technology, and their new 'Heart of Joy' driving dynamics system. While official figures are undisclosed, speculation suggests a power output ranging from 700 hp to 800 hp.
