Volkswagen is injecting a dose of retro charm into its latest electric vehicle, the ID. Polo. Moving away from the minimalist, touch-sensitive controls of previous models, the new compact EV embraces physical buttons and design cues reminiscent of classic VWs like the original Polo and Golf. A standout feature is a digital "tape deck" display that appears when music is played, adding a unique nostalgic touch.
The interior of the new ID. Polo is a deliberate step back in time, blending modern EV technology with beloved design elements from Volkswagen's heritage. This approach aims to evoke the same charm and appeal as iconic models such as the Mk1 Golf and GTI, and the Mk1 and Mk2 Polo. The digital driver display includes an analog-style speedometer, a Casio-esque LED clock, and retro-futuristic battery readouts, all designed to pay homage to VW's classic automotive history.
Perhaps the most distinctive retro element is the digital "tape deck" interface for the music player. When activated, it mimics the look and feel of a cassette tape, complete with "low noise" indicators and "side" readouts. This feature, while not essential, adds a significant layer of personality and appeal, particularly for those who grew up with cassette tapes or appreciate vintage aesthetics.
Volkswagen's decision to reintroduce physical buttons is partly driven by consumer feedback, as capacitive controls proved unpopular. Additionally, new EU regulations are pushing for more tactile controls in vehicles. However, VW has gone beyond mere compliance by integrating these buttons within a design that heavily draws on its rich history. This strategy aims to differentiate the ID. Polo from competitors, especially those from China, by leveraging a heritage that resonates deeply with European buyers.
The ID. Polo is slated for release in Europe in April, with an anticipated starting price below $30,000 (€25,000). It is expected to offer up to 280 miles of range on the WLTP cycle, with a sporty GTI variant also planned. Volkswagen hopes that the ID. Polo's personality and nostalgic touches will give it a competitive edge, and there's optimism that this character will extend to future VW electric models sold globally, including in the U.S.
