The Tommykaira R-Z R34 GT-R is one of the rarest and most respected modified versions of the Nissan Skyline. Built by Tommykaira, a legendary Japanese tuning house, only a limited number were produced - reports indicate just a few dozen exist. Each car started life as a high spec Nissan GT-R V-Spec before undergoing extensive transformation at Tommykaira's facility resulting in a blend of exclusivity, advanced engineering plus collectible value.
Tommykaira overhauled the mechanical but also visual aspects of the R34 GT-R. Under the hood, the car retains Nissan's iconic 2.6-liter RB26DETT twin turbo straight-six engine but Tommykaira increased displacement to 2.7 liters, added a custom crankshaft and fitted larger turbochargers. This results in an output of 530 horsepower - significantly more than the original's 276 horsepower as well as even higher than the usually understated stock real world performance figures. Suspension is enhanced using Bilstein shocks providing improved handling, while AP-Racing brakes with six piston calipers increase stopping power. Distinctive 19-inch forged magnesium wheels with a gold finish further highlight the model's uniqueness.
Visually, the Tommykaira R-Z receives a series of subtle but effective modifications. The front features a reshaped fascia, improved air intakes and new grilles for a sharper look. The chin spoiler or broadened fenders add sportiness without compromising the original Skyline's aesthetic balance. Extended side skirts and a fixed, dual pane rear wing set on aluminum uprights deliver further aerodynamic benefits and road presence making this car easily distinguishable from its factory siblings.
Models like the Tommykaira R-Z command a premium, especially considering their rarity and the respected reputation of both the base car next to tuner. At auction, the car in question is expected to fetch between $600,000 and $666,000 reflecting both its mileage - 12,546 miles since new - the demand among enthusiasts and collectors. This high price also aligns with the growing market trend of appreciating Japanese performance cars from the late 1990s plus early 2000s.
While many performance tuners worked on the Skyline GT-R, few achieved the balance of exclusivity, factory level build quality and engineering prowess found in Tommykaira models. In comparison to mass produced Skyline GT-Rs or even other rare editions like the NISMO Z-Tune, the R-Z stands out for its unique upgrades but also limited build numbers. It fits firmly into the top tier of collector grade JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) vehicles appealing to enthusiasts seeking rarity, provenance and technical excellence.
