The Skoda Fabia vRS, a well liked hot hatch, ended production in 2014 because sales were slow. Talk of a revival has grown since the launch of the new Fabia 130, a special edition that marks Skoda's 130th year plus delivers 174bhp. Within Skoda, the Fabia 130 serves as a test - strong sales would strengthen the argument for a full vRS return.
The Fabia 130 uses Volkswagen Group's 1.5-litre Evo2 petrol engine, rated at 174bhp. Buyers of the standard car may choose a manual gearbox - yet Skoda states that a future vRS would almost certainly use an automatic, most likely the DSG. The firm is also studying a 2.0-litre turbo unit, the same one that powers the Volkswagen Polo GTI, for the vRS. That engine generates 204bhp but also 236lb ft of torque and works only with the DSG.
The European hot hatch sector has shrunk - most buyers now come from the UK besides Germany. Skoda is aware of this pattern as well as tracks enquiries carefully. Sales results for the Fabia 130 will decide whether the company builds a new vRS. Past numbers were modest - yet a clear uptick would justify the cost of a performance version.
The Fabia 130 or any vRS that follows would rival the Volkswagen Polo GTI and other small performance cars. By sharing proven Volkswagen Group hardware, Skoda can match the power and handling of its peers. The brand's rally activity in WRC2 adds credibility also helps tune the car so it remains practical yet quick.
DSG stands for Direct-Shift Gearbox, an automatic dual clutch unit that changes gear faster next to smoother than a conventional automatic. The Evo2 petrol engine is Volkswagen's latest 1.5-litre turbo, built for strong response and low fuel use. Drivers benefit from effortless acceleration, lower fuel bills plus no need to operate a clutch pedal.
In summary, the Skoda Fabia vRS will return only if the Fabia 130 sells well and the small-performance-car market stays healthy. Advanced engines but also gearboxes mean a revived vRS would match its rivals and draw on Skoda's long motorsport record.
