Changan, a major Chinese car manufacturer with historical roots in arms production dating back to the 1860s, has recently entered the European market, focusing first on the UK. While the company started building Jeeps under licence in the 1950s, it began developing its own vehicles in the 1980s. Today, Changan operates a UK research and development center, signaling its commitment to international growth. Its European launch centers on electric crossovers under the Deepal sub-brand.
Changan’s current offerings in Europe include the Deepal S07 electric crossover and the soon-to-launch, smaller Deepal S05. Both models are designed to align with European preferences for crossover-style vehicles, prioritizing comfort and practicality. The company has also introduced the S09 performance model, the L07 sedan, and the G318, a traditional 4x4. These vehicles reflect Changan’s dual focus: crossover convenience for families and sporty, performance-oriented features for younger buyers.
Changan’s design is guided by Klaus Zyciora, known for shaping Volkswagen’s ID lineup. The focus is on combining advanced electric powertrains with modern styling. Deepal models embrace a performance-oriented approach and spacious interiors to cater to diverse customers. The likely use of the VIIA concept—a three-seat, sporty GT—shows Changan’s aim to create a flagship "dream machine" with fast acceleration, agile handling, and high-quality materials. Electric vehicle (EV) architecture in these models offers instant torque and quiet operation, making city and highway drives more appealing.
Changan is entering a competitive segment dominated by brands like Volkswagen, Nissan, and Hyundai. However, Changan’s value proposition lies in delivering contemporary design, high technology, and affordability. Its EV offerings are positioned to compete against popular models like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. By leveraging advanced research and competitive pricing, Changan aims to attract both traditional SUV fans and younger, tech-oriented drivers.
Design chief Klaus Zyciora describes cars as “dream machines”—vehicles that inspire freedom and excitement. Changan’s upcoming flagship is expected to build on the VIIA concept, targeting driving enthusiasts who appreciate sporty characteristics. While details remain limited, a development time of two to three years aligns with industry pace and suggests Changan is committed to delivering a high-performance, visually striking EV.
Changan’s entry into Europe with the Deepal lineup represents a bold step, blending technical innovation and market awareness to challenge established European and Asian brands.
