Subaru is potentially signaling a significant shift in its vehicle naming strategy with the recent filing of three new trademarks: ACX, VPX, and ZPX. These applications, filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, strongly suggest the development of new models, possibly electric vehicles, and hint at the return of performance-oriented variants.
The trademark applications for ACX, VPX, and ZPX are specifically noted for "automobiles and structural parts, therefore, electric cars," clearly pointing towards an expansion of Subaru's electric vehicle offerings. Unlike previous naming conventions or component references, these three-letter designations appear to be entirely new for the brand, not directly linked to any past models or concepts.
Adding an intriguing layer to these filings, Subaru has also included applications for STI performance versions and Wilderness variants for these mysterious new nameplates. This is particularly noteworthy as Subaru currently does not offer any STI-badged products in the U.S., despite strong demand from enthusiasts for STI versions of models like the BRZ and WRX. The inclusion of the Wilderness tag on the ZPX trademark further suggests that at least one of these potential new vehicles could be geared towards rugged, off-road adventures.
While these trademarks indicate potential new directions, it's important to remember that not all trademarked names make it to production. Subaru has a history of filing numerous names that are ultimately not used. For instance, the company trademarked a dozen names last year, including Accomplice, Everguide, and Trailseeker, with only "Uncharted" making its way into the market. Therefore, the ultimate fate of ACX, VPX, and ZPX remains to be seen, but their filings certainly spark excitement about Subaru's evolving lineup and commitment to both electrification and performance.
