Mercedes-Benz has opened orders for its first electric estate car, the CLA Shooting Brake, with a starting price of £47,750. It gives more load space than the ordinary CLA saloon and sits on the brand new Mercedes Modular Architecture platform. From launch buyers choose between two versions - the 250+ plus the 350 4Matic - both carry the latest electric drivetrain hardware.
The CLA 250+ has one 268bhp electric motor and an 85kWh battery - it covers up to 469 miles on the WLTP cycle and reaches 62mph from rest in 6.8 seconds. The stronger 350 4Matic uses two motors that produce 349bhp - it hits 62mph in 5.0 seconds but also offers 451 miles of range. The battery accepts up to 320kW DC fast charging - an optional converter lets it work with 400-volt DC posts.
The Shooting Brake adds extra length behind the rear wheels - boot volume grows by 50 litres to 1,290 litres when the rear seats are folded. A 101-litre front trunk as well as standard roof rails give further storage. At the front an illuminated grille and distinctive light signature mark the new brand face.
The cabin runs the latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment. A 14-inch touchscreen, an AI voice assistant and a refreshed app store sit at the centre of the dash. Trim grades rise from Sport to AMG Line Premium Plus - each higher grade brings items like a panoramic roof, a better sound system also extra driver aids.
The Shooting Brake costs £2,135 more than the CLA saloon and aims at buyers who want electric efficiency plus estate space. Hybrid variants will follow, but for now the car faces other pure electric estates besides SUVs from Audi next to BMW. The next GLA or GLB, built on the same MMA platform, show that the firm plans to share parts and keep the range electric focused.
The Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake delivers long range, a larger load bay plus up-to-date tech in an all electric estate shape following the industry shift toward battery power and practical luxury.
