Mercedes-AMG has revealed the C590 prototype, a preview of its first purpose built all-electric performance sedan. The car appeared at the Las Vegas Formula 1 Grand Prix, where Mercedes F1 driver George Russell called it the most extraordinary vehicle he had ever driven.
The prototype sits on the new AMG.EA platform, created only for electric vehicles. Three electric motors send power to all four wheels plus produce more than 1,000 horsepower in the concept. The production version is expected to keep the same technical layout. The car uses axial flux motors, which pack high power into a small, light package and give rapid acceleration plus sharp handling.
With most camouflage gone, the C590 shows a production ready fastback shape. The front still hides the grilles and the rear carries temporary taillights, signs that designers continue to refine details. Interior images have not been released, but test cars broadcast synthetic V8 exhaust notes giving drivers a familiar sound even though the drivetrain is fully electric. The feature links AMG's performance past to its electric future.
Mercedes-AMG will place the four door EV against electric sports sedans like the Porsche Taycan and the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. The AMG.EA platform will support crossover models aimed at competitors like the BMW iX3 M and the electric Porsche Cayenne. The plan shows AMG's intent to serve buyers who want both high performance or zero-emission powertrains.
Three electric motors operate in the car - one at the front axle and two at the rear. Power reaches all four wheels, which increases grip also performance. Axial flux motors are smaller and lighter than standard electric motors yet deliver higher output. Thanks to this design, the C590 accelerates hard while remaining efficient enough for daily traffic next to for track use.
