Ford refreshed the full size Expedition SUV, but the updates did not improve every aspect. We tested the off road Tremor trim and report only the verified details.
A - The vehicle succeeds when it keeps proven hardware. The twin turbo V-6 delivers abundant smooth power. The Tremor suspension produces a cushioned ride, smoother than that of the upscale Lincoln Navigator. Cabin space ranks high - the third row gives adults real comfort. The split tailgate earns praise because it supports grocery bags or heavy items - yet it blocks access for shorter users when lowered.
A - Problems begin once you sit in the driver seat. Ford attempted interior innovation plus reduced ease of use. The steering wheel has a flat top, oval shape that testers judged awkward to grip. The wheel stays small and non-round so that it does not hide the new wide instrument display, a screen placed toward the center of the dash. The design expects the driver to look over the wheel at the screen - many people must lean forward or recline farther than desired for a clear view.
A - Additional odd choices persist. Two unmarked thumb pads on the wheel move the column - press a pad but also the column function appears on the same screen the wheel may hide. The same pair of pads also run the audio and the telephone. The mode selector for four wheel drive sits beside the driver's left knee, the usual spot for a headlamp switch. The real headlamp menu hides inside the central touchscreen. The rotary gear selector as well as the cupholders sit too far forward for easy reach.
A - The SUV manages rough ground well - it crossed deep sandy ruts without strain. On a ramp that removed grip from three wheels it needed a long pause before torque rerouted and the truck moved on. A feature named Trail Turn Assist brakes the inside rear wheel or shrinks the turning radius, a useful help on narrow trails.
A - The 2025 Expedition covers the core tasks of a full size SUV - it carries up to eight adults in comfort, rides smoothly, supplies strong power and tows heavy loads. The Tremor trim adds readiness for dirt trails. Yet Ford pursued modern style also created daily annoyance. A cabin with straightforward controls would turn the Expedition into an easier SUV to recommend.
