Renault has changed the Megane besides Scenic so they now run only on battery power. Executives say petrol engines might return. The following notes set out what the firm has said.
The electric Megane sells below target. Petrol variants would attract drivers who still avoid full electric cars. Extra drivelines should lift Megane sales in Europe's compact class.
No. Renault will keep a zero emission version. Buyers will have a choice. The coming Megane or Scenic will appear both as pure-electric and as hybrids.
The chief executive backs a range extender. In this layout a petrol engine serves only as a generator for the battery - the wheels turn only through electric motors. The car keeps EV response - yet gains extra range and quick petrol refill on long trips.
The fresh platform that accepts both electric plus hybrid hardware will underpin the next Megane next to Scenic. Both reach the market before 2030.
A revised face will appear soon on the present Megane. The line up will also gain a larger traction battery. The current 60 kWh pack gives roughly 285 miles - a higher capacity pack would raise that value and strengthen the EV offer.
