Ram is adding a new small pickup to its European range. The truck is called the Rampage. Ram builds it in Brazil and will sell it in Europe before it reaches the United States. The Rampage targets buyers who do not want the big 1500-series Ram. The truck uses a unibody shell - the body plus frame form one unit, the way most cars besides SUVs do. Old-style pickups keep the body bolted to a separate frame. The Rampage is 198 inches from bumper to bumper, far shorter than the full size Ram 1500 - it fits narrow European streets and tight parking spots. Beneath the sheet metal it shares parts with the Jeep Compass but also the Dodge Hornet. Ram promotes it as a “lifestyle” pickup - useful for daily errands yet still able to handle rough tracks. In South America the truck already sells with either a turbo gasoline or a turbo diesel engine. Each version uses a nine speed automatic and sends power to all four wheels. Ram has not yet said which engines Europe will receive. The brand will reveal the truck to the public at a horse show in Verona, Italy, in early November. Prices as well as full equipment lists will follow that event. Some people hoped the Rampage would reach the United States to challenge the Ford Maverick or Hyundai Santa Cruz, but that plan is off the table. Heavy import taxes on trucks built outside the U.S. block the way. Rather than import the Rampage, Ram is said to be creating a different midsize pickup for North America. That future model will keep the traditional ladder frame and will square up against the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma next to Chevrolet Colorado.
