What is this test of the Skoda Elroq all about?
The Skoda Elroq is a compact electric SUV. We wanted to know whether it could replace a petrol car on a long journey - we drove it multiple hundred miles, mostly on motorways, where EVs often struggle.
How does the Elroq handle normal, everyday driving?
It behaves quietly and smoothly in town or suburbia. Energy use stays low - the meter records 4.3 miles for every kilowatt hour of battery.
What was the starting range for the long motorway trip?
The battery holds 82 kWh. We charged it to 100 % before leaving. The display promised 343 miles.
Does the car actually get that much range on the motorway?
High speed shortens the distance you can travel. Cruising at an even 70 mph, the Elroq uses one kilowatt hour to cover 3.4 miles. A full battery therefore delivers about 279 motorway miles, not 343.
Can you give a clear example of this range drop?
The trip meter passed 110 miles - yet the range counter lost 140 miles. The numbers show that 70 mph drains the battery faster than the distance you cover.
What other factors used up the battery during the drive?
Two items stand out - the legal 70 mph cruise and the climate control, which ran because the cabin needed cooling. Both pull extra current from the pack.
So, how much range was left at the destination?
The driver kept a safety margin aiming to keep 106 miles in reserve. After the cruise plus the air conditioning trimmed that buffer, he reached Crewe with 80 miles still on the display.
