What is this wild looking Subaru?
This is a one off Subaru stunt vehicle nicknamed "Brataroo." The project started with a stock Subaru Brat pickup and was built for rally driver Travis Pastrana by the crew at Hoonigan.
Who actually built the car?
The mechanical work went to Vermont Sportscar - they build and service Travis Pastrana's competition Subaru WRX cars - they took the Brat off road and ramp ready.
What kind of engine does it have?
The original 1.6-liter powerplant was removed plus replaced with a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat four based on the modern Subaru performance platform.
How much power are we talking about?
The new engine delivers 670 horsepower and 680 lb ft of torque - that is about ten times the output of the factory Brat. Maximum engine speed is 9500 rpm.
What's going on with all the wings and vents?
The wide carbon fiber panels house an active aero setup similar to the one on Pastrana's previous "Family Huckster" GL wagon. Various body parts move to generate or lower downforce.
How do "active aerodynamics" work on a stunt car?
Flaps and wings can change position while the car is airborne. The driver adjusts them to control pitch but also rotation for more exact landings.
What does the interior look like?
No original equipment remains. A custom carbon dash replaces the stock piece. Some panels use a flax composite that recalls the old wood accents. The climate control faceplate now commands the active aero.
Where can I see the Brataroo in action?
The pickup was built for the next Gymkhana video, filmed in Australia - that setting inspired the name "Brataroo."
