BMW is officially ending production of its gas powered X4 coupe SUV, but the nameplate's story isn’t over. The company is already testing its replacement, a fully electric model expected to be called the iX4. Recently spotted in camouflage, this new coupe SUV is being developed on BMW's next generation "Neue Klasse" electric vehicle platform signaling a new direction for the model.
The iX4 is designed as a sportier version of the upcoming iX3 electric SUV. From the front doors forward, the two vehicles appear to share their design including the headlights, grille and hood. The major changes begin from the middle of the car back. The iX4 features a dramatically sloping roofline that flows into a fastback style rear end giving it a more aggressive and athletic profile. The rear glass is steeply angled plus topped with a small spoiler. This sportier look is enhanced by broad, sculpted rear shoulders. At the back slim LED taillights are positioned close together and the license plate is relocated to the bumper for a cleaner look.
The cabin of the iX4 is expected to be nearly identical to the iX3 - it will feature BMW's new Panoramic iDrive display, a long screen that extends from pillar to pillar. A large central touchscreen will manage infotainment and an optional 3D head up display will also be available. The entire system will run on the new BMW Operating System X. The main trade off for the stylish exterior will be in the back, where the sloping roof will lower headroom for rear passengers compared to the iX3.
As a Neue Klasse vehicle, the iX4 will be exclusively electric - it is expected to share its powertrain options with the iX3. As an example the iX3 50 xDrive model is confirmed to have a dual motor, all-wheel-drive system producing 463 horsepower. Future variants will likely include single motor, rear-wheel-drive models but also a high performance M-badged version. The iX4 is also expected to be slightly longer than the iX3 and may have an even better drag coefficient. BMW is expected to officially debut the new iX4 in late 2026.
