Audi is reportedly considering a significant powertrain upgrade for the next-generation RS6, potentially equipping it with a V8 hybrid engine. This move aims to significantly boost performance and differentiate it from the upcoming RS5, while also catering to the RS6's unique buyer profile that values towing capability and luxury.
The upcoming C9-generation Audi RS6 is at a crossroads regarding its heart. While one path suggests a modified 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 plug-in hybrid, similar to the one found in the new RS5 but with increased output, the more tantalizing prospect involves adopting the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 plug-in hybrid system currently powering the Bentley Continental GT Speed. This Bentley-derived engine boasts an impressive 771 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque, positioning the new RS6 as a formidable competitor against rivals like the BMW M5.
Audi Sport boss Rolf Michl emphasized that the new RS6 will be more than just a re-skinned RS5. He highlighted the distinct identity and capabilities of the RS6, noting its historical significance and the need for each generation to offer unique selling propositions. Crucially, Michl pointed out that the RS6 must be capable of towing heavy loads such as "horses, yachts, and boats," a requirement that influences its development and differentiates it from the smaller RS5. The RS6 is also envisioned as a "very luxurious travel machine."
Prototypes of the new RS6 have confirmed its return in both the familiar Avant (wagon) body style and, significantly, as a sedan. This marks the sedan's return to the RS6 lineup for the first time in 15 years. Visually, the new models are expected to feature the signature RS treatment, including flared fenders, aggressive bumpers, and the characteristic dual exhaust outlets, mirroring the styling cues of the smaller RS5.
