Volkswagen has released a significant update to its electric hatchback, the ID.3 Neo. This revised model aims to correct the shortcomings of the original, focusing on quality and user experience. Here are the key details.
The ID.3 Neo is Volkswagen's response to customer feedback and criticism of the first-generation ID.3. The original car faced issues with interior quality and difficult-to-use software. This update is part of a broader company strategy to return to its core values of building practical, high-quality cars. The primary focus was not on a radical exterior redesign but on fixing the fundamentals inside the cabin and under the skin.
Yes, this is the most significant area of change. Volkswagen has removed the widely criticized touch-sensitive controls. The new ID.3 Neo features a steering wheel with physical buttons that provide positive feedback. The frustrating touch sliders for climate and volume have been replaced with physical switches and a traditional rotary dial. Additionally, the driver's door now has four separate window switches, eliminating the need to press a separate 'REAR' button to operate the back windows.
The ID.3 Neo introduces a new, more efficient electric motor, the APP350. This motor is designed to reduce heat losses, improving overall efficiency. It is available in three configurations:
Charging speeds vary by battery. The 50kWh and 58kWh packs can charge at up to 105kW on a DC fast charger, while the largest 79kWh pack accepts a faster rate of up to 183kW.
The exterior changes are subtle. The front end has been updated with a new bumper and a full-width light panel, aligning it with other recent Volkswagen models. The rear bumper has also been redesigned, and the tailgate is now painted to match the body color on all versions, unlike the previous model which was always black. New wheel designs are also available.
Order books for the new Volkswagen ID.3 Neo are scheduled to open in April, with the first customer deliveries expected to begin in July. Specific pricing and trim level details for different markets will be confirmed closer to the launch date.
