Nissan is entering the hybrid market with its innovative E-Power system, debuting in the 2027 Rogue. This new model aims to capture the growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles as the electric car market experiences a slowdown. The Rogue E-Power distinguishes itself with a unique series-hybrid setup, offering a distinct alternative to traditional hybrid powertrains.
Nissan's E-Power system represents a departure from conventional hybrid technology. Unlike parallel hybrids, where both the gasoline engine and electric motor can directly drive the wheels, the Rogue's E-Power system operates differently. In this series-hybrid configuration, the gasoline engine's sole purpose is to generate electricity for a small battery pack. This battery then powers electric motors located at each axle, effectively making the vehicle an electric platform propelled by a gasoline generator.
This setup is akin to an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) but without the need for plugging in. Nissan claims this design delivers the smooth, responsive power characteristic of an electric vehicle, combined with the convenience of a gasoline-powered car. This innovative approach is set to make its U.S. debut with the 2027 Rogue, marking Nissan's significant entry into the mainstream hybrid segment.
The exterior of the 2027 Nissan Rogue E-Power boasts a modern aesthetic, with a front end that evokes the design language of the new Leaf, featuring sharp, pointed daytime running lights. The overall design is characterized by crisp lines and angular elements, presenting a fresh and contemporary look compared to the outgoing model. While the design is an attractive upgrade, the E-Power powertrain is the true highlight. Nissan anticipates that the Rogue E-Power will achieve fuel economy figures north of 40 miles per gallon, positioning it as a highly competitive option in the hybrid SUV market.
