The Toyota AE86, a celebrated sports coupe from the 1980s, is receiving a comprehensive restoration service from TOM's Racing, a renowned Japanese tuning firm. This program offers a complete, ground-up rebuild of the classic vehicle, but at a price point that positions it firmly in the high-end collector market.

A Meticulous Rebuilding Process

The restoration conducted by TOM's Heritage division is exhaustive. Each project begins by stripping the donor AE86 down to its bare metal chassis. Technicians then repair any corrosion or damage before reinforcing the car's structure. This is done using additional spot welds and MIG welding, techniques that increase the chassis's rigidity and durability beyond its original factory specifications.

Following the structural work, the car is reassembled with new body panels and given a fresh coat of paint. The exterior is updated with a set of 15-inch twin four-spoke wheels designed by TOM's. Aerodynamic performance is also addressed with the addition of a functional rear diffuser, an element derived from the company's extensive racing experience.

Powertrain and Interior Enhancements

The program includes significant upgrades to the original 4-AG four-cylinder engine. The engine's bore, which is the diameter of each cylinder, is increased from 81 mm to 82 mm. This change, along with other modifications, increases the total engine displacement, or the volume of air and fuel the engine can draw in, from 1,578 cc to 1,626 cc.

These mechanical adjustments result in a substantial performance increase. The engine's output is lifted to 192 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque, a notable improvement over the original specifications. Inside, the cabin is refurbished with new seats upholstered in a woven fabric designed to match the vehicle's era, blending modern restoration quality with classic aesthetics.

Market Position and Cost Analysis

The level of detail involved in this restoration is reflected in its cost. The service starts at 13.2 million yen (approximately $83,000). For clients who require TOM's to source the AE86 donor car, the price increases to a minimum of 16.5 million yen (approximately $103,700).

To put this figure into perspective, the cost of a single TOM's-restored AE86 is equivalent to the price of more than three brand-new Toyota GR86 models in the United States. It also approaches the cost of two new GR Supra sports cars. This pricing establishes the TOM's AE86 not as a simple vehicle, but as a premium, professionally re-engineered piece of automotive history for dedicated enthusiasts.
