The electric vehicle market is witnessing an unprecedented charging speed race, with Geely's Lynk & Co 10+ emerging as a new contender. This updated electric sedan boasts an impressive charging capability, reaching nearly a full battery in less time than it takes to refuel a conventional car. This development signals a significant leap in EV technology, particularly in China's rapidly advancing automotive sector.
The Lynk & Co 10+ is engineered with a high-voltage architecture and a 900-volt Shield Gold Brick battery pack, enabling it to charge at speeds exceeding 1.1 megawatts. Geely claims the sedan can achieve a 10-70% charge in a mere 4 minutes and 22 seconds, and a 10-80% charge in 5 minutes and 32 seconds, with an average charging power of 492 kW. The remarkable 10-97% charge is completed in 8 minutes and 42 seconds, though the average power drops to 272 kW during this final stage.
This advancement places Lynk & Co directly in competition with BYD, which was the first automaker to introduce a production EV capable of over 1-megawatt charging, adding approximately 250 miles of CLTC range in just 5 minutes. The Lynk & Co 10+'s charging performance is comparable, with BYD's megawatt charging also reaching 97% from 10% in about 9 minutes. The Lynk & Co 10+ is equipped with a battery capacity of around 100 kilowatt-hours, offering a claimed CLTC range of 507 miles (816 km). It's important to note that CLTC range figures are generally more optimistic than EPA estimates.
The charging demonstration for the Lynk & Co 10+ was conducted using a Zeekr V4 ultra-fast charger, capable of delivering up to 1.2 MW. Geely, like BYD, is developing its own charging infrastructure to support its new EVs, although its network is currently smaller. While these charging speeds are impressive, questions remain regarding the long-term durability of batteries subjected to such high-powered charging and whether such rapid charging is a necessity for most consumers. Nevertheless, these developments highlight China's significant lead over the U.S. in raw EV charging power and speed. The Lynk & Co 10+ is slated for a China-only launch initially, but with Lynk & Co's presence in Europe and BYD's plans for megawatt chargers on the continent, ultra-fast EV charging could soon become a reality in Europe as well.
Beyond its charging capabilities, the Lynk & Co 10+ is built on Geely's modular SEA platform, which also underpins the Zeekr 001. The sedan boasts impressive performance figures, including a peak power output of 912 horsepower and a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h) in its most potent configuration. Innovations in cell cooling within the battery pack are crucial for enabling its ultra-rapid charging capabilities.
