The Alfa Romeo Giulia has a reputation for style and performance. But is it a smart purchase on the used market? We answer the key questions for potential buyers.
The Giulia stands out for its sharp handling and beautiful Italian design. Unlike some past Alfas, it has proven to be reasonably reliable, making it a compelling choice for an enthusiast who wants a car with character that can also be used every day. It offers a driving experience that few other sedans in its class can match.
When inspecting a used Giulia, focus on a few key areas. These issues were more common on early models and many have been fixed, but it's crucial to check.
Alfa Romeo made continuous small improvements to the Giulia over the years. For this reason, it's best to buy the newest model your budget allows. Look for cars with desirable options like adaptive dampers for a better ride, a limited-slip differential for improved traction, the upgraded Harman Kardon sound system, and the metal shift paddles for a sportier feel.
The Quadrifoglio is the top-of-the-line model with a powerful 2.9-litre V6 engine. It's incredibly fast and sounds fantastic. However, its reliability record is not as strong as the standard Giulia models. Also, note that cars built from 2020 onwards have a filter that makes the exhaust quieter. It's a thrilling car, but it comes with higher risks and running costs.
Running costs are reasonable for this type of car. Insurance groups start at 22 (out of 50), which is manageable. Road tax (VED) for most models registered after the first year is a standard rate. Early diesel models are very cheap to tax. The high-performance Quadrifoglio will be significantly more expensive to insure and tax.
