Audi's latest SQ5 for 2026 aims to strike a balance between exhilarating performance and accessible luxury. Positioned below the high-performance RS models, this iteration offers a potent V6 mild-hybrid powertrain and sporty handling, all while maintaining a competitive price point against its German rivals. The new SQ5 promises an engaging driving experience without the ostentatious displays of some competitors.
The 2026 Audi SQ5 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, augmented by a mild-hybrid system. This setup produces 362 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to all four wheels. The mild-hybrid system aids in smoothing out power delivery and reducing turbo lag. Notably, the SQ5's exhaust system has been tuned to deliver an exciting soundtrack, complete with cracks and pops during spirited driving, a feature that sets it apart from some other Audi S models.
In Australia, Audi is offering the new SQ5 in two main guises. The "Edition One" serves as the entry-level model, priced from AU$106,400 (approximately $75,300 USD). This version is designed to be more accessible, omitting features like larger wheels, premium leather, a high-end audio system, and a head-up display. For those seeking more amenities, the standard SQ5 is available starting at AU$122,400 (around $86,600 USD). In the US, prices start at $65,400.
The interior of the SQ5 "Edition One" shares much with its less powerful Q5 siblings. Key updates include Audi's latest three-spoke sport steering wheel, new paddle shifters, and S-branded sports seats offering good bolstering. The dashboard features a 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch infotainment screen. While the infotainment system is responsive and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the overall cabin quality in the "Edition One" falls short of expectations for its price point, with an abundance of piano black trim and hard plastics.
Despite interior criticisms, the SQ5 truly shines on the road. Its performance is strong, with a rapid acceleration to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The suspension strikes a good balance between sporty stiffness and comfortable cruising. Steering is precise, and the grip from the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tires is substantial. While the standard passive dampers provide a capable ride, an optional adaptive air suspension is available on higher trims for enhanced comfort and balance.
The SQ5 is equipped with standard safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. However, the system's adaptive cruise control has shown a tendency to lock onto slower vehicles in adjacent lanes, hindering its effectiveness. The absence of lane-centering assist in some markets is also noted as a drawback at this price level.
The 2026 Audi SQ5 remains a compelling choice for those seeking an SUV that offers genuine driving enjoyment. The "Edition One" model, in particular, presents a strong value proposition, delivering impressive performance and handling at a competitive price. While the interior quality could be improved, the overall driving experience makes the SQ5 a standout option in its segment, especially for drivers who still prioritize the thrill of a powerful V6 engine.
