BMW is considering a significant move into the high-end, rugged SUV market. Reports indicate the German automaker is exploring a new vehicle aimed directly at competitors like the Range Rover, with a potential launch around 2029. This represents a notable strategic shift from its current lineup of road-focused SUVs.
For years, BMW's 'X' series of vehicles has prioritized performance and handling on paved roads. The company is now looking at creating a vehicle that combines serious off-road capability with top-tier luxury. The project, reportedly known internally as G74, is more than just a rumor. Mike Reichelt, a senior vice president at BMW, has confirmed the company is actively looking at options to expand its product portfolio, including tougher vehicles.
A key question is what will power this new SUV. BMW is investing heavily in its next-generation electric platform, called "Neue Klasse," which could be used. However, executives have hinted that a fully electric powertrain might not be the only option. For a vehicle focused on durability and use in remote areas, gasoline or hybrid engines remain in high demand, particularly in markets like the United States, the Middle East, and Australia.
In terms of its foundation, the new SUV is expected to use a reinforced unibody frame. This construction is similar to that of a modern car, providing good ride comfort, and is the same approach used by the Range Rover. This differs from the traditional truck-like "ladder frame" used by the Mercedes G-Class, suggesting BMW is targeting a balance of luxury and off-road grit rather than pure, uncompromising ruggedness.
If launched, this new model would enter a competitive space dominated by established names. It would need to prove its worth against the luxury and capability of the Range Rover and the iconic status of the G-Class. BMW's performance division, M, might also be involved. The head of the M division, Frank van Meel, has noted that high-performance off-road racing, like the Dakar Rally, shows that speed and ruggedness can go together.
This potential SUV could also redefine the top of BMW's lineup. Some reports suggest it could serve as a replacement for the current XM, a model that has received mixed reviews. A more traditional, yet highly capable, luxury SUV might find a wider audience among buyers looking for a flagship vehicle that is both prestigious and practical.
