Toyota has made a remarkable comeback in the electric vehicle market, with its bZ crossover model achieving an "amazing start" to 2026. The Japanese automaker, once perceived as lagging in EV adoption, is now positioned to be the country's best-selling non-Tesla electric vehicle for the first quarter. This surge comes despite an overall downturn in the U.S. EV market.
In the first quarter of 2026, Toyota reported selling 10,029 units of its bZ crossover, marking an impressive 79% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance places the bZ ahead of other notable EVs, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (9,790 units sold, up 14%) and the Chevrolet Equinox EV (9,589 units sold), which was a leading seller in the previous year. Ford's Mustang Mach-E saw a significant decline, with only 4,600 units sold.
This success unfolds against a backdrop of a declining U.S. EV market, which Cox estimates fell by 28% in Q1 2026. Many manufacturers have scaled back EV plans due to shifting regulations and the expiration of federal tax credits. However, Toyota has capitalized on this slowdown by offering substantial incentives on its bZ models, with discounts averaging 30% of the transaction price in February, significantly higher than the industry average of 14.2%.
The 2026 model year bZ has undergone a significant overhaul, contributing to its newfound popularity. Toyota reduced the base model's price by over $2,000 to $36,350. Furthermore, the maximum driving range has been boosted to a competitive 314 miles from a previous 252 miles, without a substantial price increase for that configuration. While some features like one-pedal driving and integrated route planning are still noted as missing by some reviewers, the overall improvements are undeniable.
Beyond the product enhancements, Toyota's established reputation for reliability and value plays a crucial role. Consumer polls consistently show Toyota as a preferred brand for EV purchases. With additional electric models like the bZ Woodland, C-HR, and the upcoming Highlander EV slated for release in 2026, Toyota appears well-positioned for continued growth in the electric vehicle sector.
