The Mercedes-Benz GLS, often referred to as the “S-Class of SUVs,” is receiving a significant update for the 2027 model year. Since its last major redesign in 2019, the GLS has been a benchmark for luxury in the large, three-row SUV category. This latest refresh doubles down on that reputation, with a primary focus on advancing the vehicle's in-cabin technology and user experience.
The most immediate change inside the 2027 GLS is the replacement of the previous dashboard layout with a single, pillar-to-pillar glass panel. This unit, which Mercedes calls an evolution of the MBUX Superscreen, houses three distinct 12.3-inch displays: one for the driver's instruments, a central infotainment screen, and a dedicated screen for the front passenger. The graphics are sharp, and the system demonstrates fast response times to user inputs.
Underpinning this new hardware is a completely new software architecture named MB.OS, or Mercedes-Benz Operating System. This system acts as the vehicle's central computer, integrating infotainment, driver assistance features, and core vehicle functions into a single, cohesive unit. A key benefit of MB.OS is its ability to receive over-the-air (OTA) updates, allowing for future software improvements without requiring a visit to a dealership. The system also incorporates an AI-powered digital assistant designed to learn a user's habits over time.
The updated infotainment system introduces an onboard app store, giving occupants access to video streaming services, games, and productivity tools. Video content can be played on the front passenger's screen even while the vehicle is in motion. A safety system monitors the driver's eyes and will dim the passenger screen if it detects the driver is looking away from the road for too long.
Rear-seat passengers also benefit from an upgraded entertainment system. It features two 11.6-inch displays, each with its own remote. These can be used to control media and even adjust seat functions like the massage feature. Integrated cameras also enable video conferencing from the back seat.
For navigation, the system now uses Google Maps as its foundation. This is enhanced by an MBUX Augmented Navigation Head-Up Display. This technology projects directional arrows and other guidance directly onto the windshield, creating an overlay on the driver's view of the road ahead.
This technology-focused update reinforces the GLS's position at the high end of the luxury SUV market. While details on powertrain and performance are part of a separate discussion, this refresh makes it clear that the in-car digital experience is a primary battleground for flagship vehicles. The 2027 GLS is equipped to compete not just on comfort and space, but on the sophistication of its integrated software and entertainment capabilities.
