Mercedes-Benz has launched an extensive update for its GLE and GLS SUV families, introducing revised styling, a significantly upgraded interior featuring a new Superscreen, and enhanced powertrain options. The German automaker has embraced a "starry" theme, integrating the iconic Mercedes star into various design elements across the updated models.
The facelifted GLE, GLE Coupe, and GLS receive a refreshed front fascia with a larger grille, now featuring an illuminated central star and an optional illuminated surround. The headlights have also been updated, and subtle stars are incorporated into the trim pieces of the new intakes. At the rear, slimmer taillights showcase three-dimensional star graphics, connected by a new black panel and chrome trim. New mirrors and updated wheel designs round out the exterior changes.
Inside, the most significant upgrade is the standard MBUX Superscreen, a trio of 12.3-inch displays integrated into a revamped dashboard. New air vents, a modern steering wheel, updated upholstery, and three new trim options – Natural Grain Dark Brown Birch Wood, Natural Grain Brown Walnut Wood, and Light Flowing Lines Polished Aluminum – contribute to a more contemporary cabin. The updated Mercedes-Benz Operating System and an AI-infused MBUX Virtual Assistant enhance the user experience. A new, more powerful Burmester 3D Surround Sound system with 15 speakers, including roof-mounted 3D units, is also available.
In the U.S., the GLE will offer four powertrains: an improved 2.0-liter four-cylinder (255 hp, 295 lb-ft), a 3.0-liter inline-six (375 hp, 413 lb-ft), and a new flat-plane crank twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 producing 530 hp and 553 lb-ft. A new GLE 500e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid combines the inline-six with an electric motor for a WLTP electric-only range of 66 miles. The GLE Coupe exclusively features the 375 hp inline-six. The GLE 53 Hybrids (SUV and Coupe) boast a combined output of 577 hp and 553 lb-ft, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The GLS offers the inline-six and V8 options, with a GLS 63 expected later.
The updated lineup will feature MB.Drive Assist Pro, an advanced Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving system. This system, which debuted on the CLA, allows for hands-free navigation in urban environments. Pricing details are expected closer to launch, with previous reports suggesting a subscription model.
