This is Jaguar's all-new, all-electric 4-Door GT, known internally as project X900. It represents a complete restart for the brand, built from the ground up on a new technical platform. The core objective is not just to build an electric car, but to create a vehicle that delivers the distinct feeling and character associated with the Jaguar name, even without a gasoline engine.
Instead of benchmarking against modern competitors, the engineering team looked inward. In 2021, they conducted a 'Spirit of Jaguar' exercise, driving and analyzing classic models from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, including the iconic E-Type. They focused on defining the essential elements of the driving experience—from the visual presence and driving position to the feel of the controls and the unique ride and handling characteristics. These intangible qualities were then translated into specific engineering targets for the new electric model.
While the official model name and full specifications will be revealed in September, it is confirmed to be a 4-Door GT on a dedicated electric vehicle architecture. This is significant because it is not a conversion of a gasoline-powered car. Every component has been developed specifically for this model. The engineering priority has been to embed a specific dynamic character into the car, focusing on the fundamentals of ride and handling that defined its predecessors, rather than simply chasing acceleration figures.
Jaguar is deliberately positioning this car differently from many high-performance electric vehicles. The focus is less on raw performance metrics and more on the qualitative driving experience. The project's goal was to create a car with a distinct personality, one that evokes the spirit of past Jaguar icons in a modern context. It aims to offer a unique character in a market where many electric cars can feel similar to drive.
The new electric GT is a calculated and strategic move. By referencing its own celebrated history to engineer its future, Jaguar is attempting to build more than just another fast electric vehicle. The entire project is an exercise in instilling a carefully defined character into a car. Its ultimate success will be determined by whether drivers can feel that classic, elusive 'Jaguarness' from behind the wheel, proving that a brand's soul can be translated into a new electric era.
