The Chevrolet Corvette lineup is expanding with the introduction of the 2027 Grand Sport and its hybrid counterpart, the Grand Sport X. These models are engineered to occupy the space between the standard Corvette Stingray and the track-focused Z06, continuing a tradition of offering a balanced blend of performance and value. Central to this release is the debut of Chevrolet's new, larger V-8 engine.

New Engine and Hybrid Power

At the core of the 2027 Grand Sport is the new LS6 small-block V-8 engine. This is a naturally aspirated 6.7-liter unit, meaning it produces power without the aid of turbochargers or superchargers. By increasing the engine's displacement from the previous 6.2 liters, engineers have achieved an output of 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. The engine's internal components, such as the pistons and connecting rods, are now forged for increased strength and durability under high stress.

The Grand Sport X model advances this platform by incorporating a hybrid system. It adds a 186-horsepower electric motor to the front axle, creating an all-wheel-drive vehicle with a combined system output of 721 horsepower. This configuration replaces the outgoing E-Ray model and is expected to deliver acceleration times from 0 to 60 mph in the low two-second range.

Chassis and Performance Packages

The Grand Sport's design philosophy involves combining the new LS6 engine with the wider body and select performance components from the Corvette Z06. This provides a more aggressive stance and allows for wider tires, improving grip and stability. Standard equipment includes MagneRide dampers, which continuously adjust the suspension for road conditions, and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential to optimize traction during acceleration.

Chevrolet will offer three distinct chassis setups. The standard configuration includes all-season tires for general use. The Sport Performance package upgrades to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires and larger brakes from the Z06. For maximum capability, the Track Performance package adds Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, and a carbon-fiber aerodynamics package, including a rear wing for increased downforce.

Market Position and Outlook

The Grand Sport has historically been regarded as the optimal choice for enthusiasts seeking heightened performance without the uncompromising nature of the top-tier track models. The 2027 version appears set to continue this legacy. It provides a substantial performance increase over the Stingray while maintaining a level of practicality for road use that the Z06 partially sacrifices for track dominance.

With a projected starting price under $100,000, the Grand Sport is positioned to be a strong competitor in the sports car market, offering a high level of performance for its cost. It represents a strategic move by Chevrolet to provide a comprehensive range of options within the Corvette family, catering to different driver preferences and priorities. The Grand Sport and Grand Sport X are poised to become compelling options for those seeking a powerful and well-rounded American sports car.
