What are these new Tesla chargers?

Tesla has introduced a new prefabricated Supercharger design, nicknamed the "Folding Unit." This new approach involves building entire charging station sections in a factory before they are shipped out. Each unit includes eight charging stalls and a power cabinet mounted on a hinged steel base, all pre-wired and ready to go.

How does this new design speed up installation?

The key is prefabrication. The old method involved installing up to four stalls on a heavy concrete base. The new folding design allows two complete eight-stall units to fit on a single truck. This means 33% more stalls can be shipped at once. Once on-site, a crane simply places the units on the ground. This process cuts installation time in half and reduces overall costs by about 20%.

Are these new chargers more powerful?

Yes. These are the latest V4 Superchargers. While most current Superchargers (V3) top out at 250 kilowatts (kW) of power, the new V4 stalls can deliver up to 500 kW. The new power cabinets that support these stalls can output a total of 1.2 megawatts. For drivers with newer electric vehicles capable of accepting higher charging speeds, this means significantly less time spent waiting for a charge.

What does this mean for the average EV driver?

This innovation allows Tesla to expand its already extensive Supercharger network faster and more efficiently. A quicker rollout means more available charging stations, reducing wait times and addressing charging anxiety for all EV drivers, not just Tesla owners. As most major car brands have adopted Tesla's charging standard, this rapid expansion benefits a growing number of electric vehicles on the road.
