The Xiaomi SU7, a vehicle that has already made a significant impact on the electric vehicle market, has received its first major update. Introduced in 2024, the updated SU7 boasts a stronger structure, enhanced efficiency and range, a quieter cabin, and redesigned door handles. This refresh comes as Xiaomi prepares to expand its automotive presence globally, with plans to export vehicles outside of China starting in 2027.
While the exterior styling remains largely consistent with minor tweaks to bumpers and new wheel/color options, the most noticeable change is the adoption of new electronic door handles. These now feature a flip-up operation and can be manually used, addressing safety concerns that arose with the previous flush design. Inside, the center console has been redesigned to align with the YU7 crossover, incorporating screw-in ports for accessories. The cabin also benefits from laminated glass and softer touch materials on the dashboard and upper door panels, contributing to a more premium ambiance.
The underlying mechanical structure of the SU7 has been significantly reinforced for improved safety and driving dynamics. A structural crossmember now bisects the single-pane glass roof, enhancing rigidity. Performance sees an upgrade with wider rear tires and dual-chamber air suspension on higher trims. Xiaomi's proprietary "V6s Plus" electric motor is now standard, offering increased RPM capability. Power output has been boosted to 320 hp for the standard version and 690 hp for the Max model. The 800-volt architecture, now standard on all trims, enables an extended range of up to 902 kilometers (560 miles) on the WLTC cycle and allows for rapid charging, adding 670 km (416 miles) in just 15 minutes. An updated ADAS computer with more processing power and standard LiDAR across all models further enhance the vehicle's capabilities.
Early reviews from Chinese automotive YouTubers indicate that the updates have resulted in a more refined and mature driving experience. Drivers have praised the revised pedal feel, noting a more natural modulation akin to internal combustion engine vehicles, which adds personality to the driving experience. The car's handling and turn-in ability have also been highlighted as significant improvements. Coupled with a revised software suite, the updated SU7 is poised to be a formidable competitor in both the Chinese and international markets.
