The electric vehicle market is expanding with two new contenders, the Jeep Recon and the Rivian R2. Both are electric SUVs aimed at adventure-focused drivers, but they approach this goal with different philosophies regarding performance, capability, and price.
The 2026 Jeep Recon has a starting price of $65,000, while the Rivian R2 launch model is listed at $57,990. In terms of power, both vehicles are closely matched. The Recon features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 650 horsepower from a 100 kWh battery pack. The R2 delivers a similar 656 horsepower from its dual-motor setup, powered by an 87.9 kWh battery. Both models achieve a 0-60 mph time of approximately 3.6 seconds.
A significant point of difference is the driving range. The Recon Moab trim offers up to 230 miles on a single charge. In contrast, the R2 Performance boasts a range of 330 miles, providing an additional 100 miles. Both vehicles feature similar fast-charging capabilities, able to replenish their batteries from a low state to 80% in under 30 minutes.
For off-road performance, vehicle geometry is critical. The Rivian R2 has a slightly higher ground clearance at 9.6 inches compared to the Recon's 9.1 inches. However, the Jeep possesses superior approach, departure, and breakover angles. These angles measure a vehicle's ability to climb and descend steep obstacles without the bumpers or underbody making contact. The Recon's design is optimized for clearing challenging terrain.
In terms of size, the Recon is longer than the R2, but the R2 has a longer wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels). A longer wheelbase can contribute to a more stable ride on open roads.
The two SUVs offer distinct design features. The Jeep Recon emphasizes an open-air experience, with doors and glass panels that can be removed without tools. It also offers an optional one-touch power top. The Rivian R2 provides a large panoramic glass roof and a drop-down rear window.
When it comes to practicality, the R2 has an edge in cargo capacity. It includes a 5.2 cubic foot front trunk, or "frunk," and a total of 79.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The Recon has a smaller 3 cubic foot frunk and 65.9 cubic feet of total cargo room. Both interiors feature large digital displays and premium materials, though specific standard features vary between the models.
The decision between the Recon and R2 depends on user priorities. The Recon is built for the dedicated off-road enthusiast who values maximum obstacle clearance and Jeep's traditional open-air freedom. The R2 offers a compelling package for those who prioritize longer range, greater cargo space, and a lower entry price.
