DS Automobiles is developing a new small car, or "supermini," that will revive the DS 3 name. The new model's design will be heavily inspired by the original DS 3 from the early 2010s, a car the brand considers an iconic part of its recent history. This strategy follows a successful industry trend of re-imagining classic models for the modern era, similar to what has been done with the Mini and the upcoming Renault 5.
The decision is based on market analysis. The greatest successes in reviving iconic products have been with small cars. A retro-inspired supermini has proven to be a popular formula. The new DS 3 aims to capture the appeal of its predecessor while fitting into the current market for stylish, premium small vehicles. It will serve as the entry point to the DS brand.
The new DS 3 is positioned to compete directly with other premium, design-focused electric superminis. Its primary rivals will be the new all-electric Renault 5, which also uses a retro design, and the established Mini Cooper Electric. The battle will be for customers who value style, brand heritage, and compact, efficient electric performance.
The new retro-styled DS 3 will be the smallest and most accessible model in the brand's range, designated as the "No3." DS has confirmed it has no plans to introduce any models smaller than this. The brand's focus for larger vehicles is on its "No7" and the upcoming flagship "No8" model, which will be the largest and most expensive car DS offers. A revival of the classic large SM saloon is not a current priority.
While specific technical specifications have not been released, the new DS 3 will be an all-electric vehicle. This aligns with the industry's shift away from internal combustion engines. It will be built on a platform designed for small electric cars, balancing cost with the premium features expected from the DS brand. The goal is to offer sufficient range and performance for urban and daily driving while maintaining a competitive price point within its segment.
