The 2027 BMW i3 is the first all-electric version of the iconic 3 Series sedan. It is not related to the previous, smaller i3 model. This new car is built on BMW's next-generation electric platform, called "Neue Klasse." This is significant because the upcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series will remain on an older architecture, meaning the electric i3 is designed from the ground up with newer technology.
The design is a modern take on classic BMW proportions, featuring a long hood and a short rear deck. It draws from the i Vision DEE concept car, with a sharp "shark-nose" front end. Instead of the large vertical grilles seen on some recent BMWs, the i3 has a sleek, horizontal black panel with illuminated virtual kidney grilles and slim headlights. The car has a longer wheelbase than the current 3 Series and features frameless windows and flush door handles for a clean, athletic look.
The launch model, the i3 50 xDrive, will be all-wheel drive with two electric motors producing a combined 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. This output is nearly on par with the current BMW M3. The car's dynamics are managed by a new centralized computer system that controls the powertrain and suspension instantly. This system is engineered to provide exceptional grip and agility, making the car feel lighter and more responsive than its weight would suggest.
The interior is dominated by a large, 43.3-inch panoramic screen that stretches across the dashboard, combined with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen. The system uses an advanced personal assistant for voice commands. For charging, the i3 uses an 800-volt system, allowing it to charge at rates up to 400 kW at compatible public stations. It will come standard with the NACS port, making it compatible with Tesla's Supercharger network. The vehicle also supports bi-directional charging, meaning it can potentially power a home or other devices.
The 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive is expected to arrive in early 2027. Pricing is estimated to start in the mid-$60,000 range. This positions it competitively against the current high-performance gasoline model, the M340i xDrive, while offering superior electric performance and more advanced technology. A less powerful, rear-wheel-drive model may follow, but details have not been confirmed.
