Volkswagen is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the upcoming ID. Cross, its most affordable EV yet. Teased ahead of its official debut this fall, the compact electric crossover promises an accessible entry point into the EV market for European consumers, with pricing expected to start around €28,000 (approximately $32,220).
The ID. Cross will be available with a choice of three front-mounted electric motors, offering power outputs of 114 hp (85 kW), 133 hp (99 kW), and 208 hp (155 kW). Complementing these motor options are two battery pack choices: a 37 kWh unit and a larger 52 kWh unit. The smaller 37 kWh battery, likely utilizing lithium iron phosphate chemistry, will support 90 kW DC fast charging and will be paired with the 114 hp and 133 hp motor variants. The 52 kWh battery, expected to use nickel manganese cobalt chemistry, will offer a range of up to 280 miles (450 km) and support faster 105 kW DC charging. A performance-oriented GTI variant for the related ID. Polo, boasting 223 hp, is slated for a 2027 release, though it's unclear if the ID. Cross will receive a similar performance upgrade.
Volkswagen has confirmed the ID. Cross will measure 163.5 inches (4,153 mm) in length, 70.6 inches (1,794 mm) in width, and 62.2 inches (1,581 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 102.4 inches (2,601 mm). The vehicle will be capable of accommodating 20-inch wheels and will have a towing capacity of up to 2,645 lbs (1,200 kg). While interior images have not yet been released, the cabin is expected to mirror the ID. Polo, featuring a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch infotainment system. Cargo space is rated at 16.8 cubic feet (475 liters), expandable to 47.3 cubic feet (1,340 liters) with the rear seats folded. An additional 0.7 cubic feet (22 liters) of storage will be available in the frunk.
The introduction of the ID. Cross signifies Volkswagen's commitment to making electric mobility more accessible. With its competitive starting price and practical design, the ID. Cross is poised to become a significant player in the growing segment of affordable electric crossovers in the European market.
